San Isidro de El General is the main city of Pérez Zeledón canton, in the General valley inland from Dominical. It sits on Route 2, the Inter-American Highway, and it is the gateway to Chirripó National Park. The park offices are in San Gerardo de Rivas, a small town at the foot of the park, 20 km east of San Isidro. It suits hikers planning Chirripó and travelers who want a mountain stop between the coast and San José.
Chirripó reservations and permits
These rules come from SINAC, the National System of Conservation Areas, which runs the park through its La Amistad Pacífico conservation area. They were reviewed in October 2026.
- Reserve your entry first. Chirripó visits need a prior reservation through SINAC's official online reservation system. Chirripó National Park is one of the parks you can book there.
- Your ticket covers entry only. SINAC's system sells park admission. Lodging at the Base Crestones shelter, meals and porters are booked separately with the park's concession operator, the Consorcio, through chirripo.org.
- Entries are personal. You can't change the name or ID number on a ticket to give it to someone else.
- Register the day before. ICT's park sheet says you must register at the park office in San Gerardo de Rivas the day before your hike.
- Fees and limits change. SINAC sets entry fees, the number of entries per booking and the rules for date changes. Official pages have shown different figures over time, so confirm them in the booking system rather than relying on a number printed elsewhere.
Pets are not allowed in Costa Rica's protected areas, and you must carry your trash out of the park.
The trail
The main trail climbs from San Gerardo de Rivas to Base Crestones, a distance SINAC gives as 14.5 km and classes as extreme. Plan for a long, hard day with a heavy pack, and start early.
ICT's park sheet warns that the temperature can drop below freezing, so bring gloves, thick socks, a wool hat and a warm coat. The sun is also strong, so pack long sleeves, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Postpone your hike if you're sick. Check current conditions with the park office in San Gerardo before you start.

Highland nature
Costa Rica's National Museum counts 84 bird species in the Talamanca páramo, the high grass-and-shrub zone of these mountains. More than half of the resident species are regional endemics found only in Costa Rica and nearby western Panama, such as the volcano junco and the fiery-throated hummingbird. The resplendent quetzal, a threatened species, is also recorded there. Read more about highland birding in the south.
San Isidro as a base
San Isidro works as a stop on the drive between San José and the coast. Route 243 runs down to Dominical, about 34 km away. Buses link San José with San Isidro, and a local bus runs from San Isidro up to San Gerardo de Rivas. Timetables change, so confirm them at the terminal.
From San Isidro, head down to the coast at Dominical for beaches and waterfalls, or see fitting Chirripó into a road trip.
