Dominical is a small beach town on Route 34, the Costanera Sur highway, at the northern end of the southern Costa Rica coast. It has tour and commercial services, a beach with strong waves and forest reserves close by. It works well as a first stop after the drive from San José.
Who it suits
- Travelers who like a beach town base: you can walk to the sand, shops and tour services.
- Nature lovers: forest trails, mangroves and waterfall trips are a short drive away.
- Road-trippers: Route 243 climbs inland from here to San Isidro de El General, so you can link the coast with the mountains.
Beaches
Playa Dominical has strong waves. Waves and currents change from day to day, so check current conditions with your stay or a local tour office before you swim.
Nearby Playa Dominicalito has moderate waves. At its southern end, Punta Dominical is covered in tropical rainforest, which makes a green backdrop for a beach walk.
Surfing in Dominical: Playa Dominical's strong waves draw surfers. For breaks, seasons and lessons, see Dominical surf breaks and lessons on Surf Costa Rica, which also shows places to stay near the beach.
Forest and wildlife
Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge lies along Route 34, northwest of the Río Barú bridge and the turnoff for San Isidro. ICT's guide to the refuge notes about 330 hectares of primary and secondary rainforest, wetlands, mangroves and coast. When Route 34 was paved, wildlife passages were built under and over the road so animals such as monkeys and peccaries can cross.
Its trails are a gentle introduction to the area's rainforest wildlife near Dominical. Sloths, white-faced capuchins and many birds can be seen there, but sightings are never certain.
Waterfalls
From Dominical, tours head inland to the Nauyaca waterfalls and to hills with views over the coast. Ask your stay about current access and road conditions before you drive yourself.
Closer to Uvita, a guided trip visits smaller waterfalls and ends at a viewpoint for sunset:
- Waterfalls and a sunset viewpoint: a guided trip to two or three waterfalls near Uvita, a rocky beach and a mountain lookout for sunset, with pickup in Dominical, Uvita or Ojochal. It does not go to Nauyaca. View on Viator Partner link
